The Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language announced today the launch of its new official smartphone app on the App Store and Google Play, aiming to make the dictionary’s content more accessible to all categories of users, including researchers, writers and others, across the Arab world and globally.
In its new form, the app reflects the latest updates to the dictionary’s electronic portal, which were introduced alongside last year’s “Completion” ceremony, making them readily available to users of smartphones running different operating systems.
The app enables users to search approximately 300,000 lexical entries, 10,000 roots and 10,000 bibliographic sources, as well as contexts within a linguistic corpus containing around one billion words. Users also benefit from all the enhancements and services introduced to the portal over the past year, most notably the automated text-to-speech service made available on the portal last June.
The app also lets users create accounts and sign in as they do on the portal, giving them access to features such as saving searches and results, sending comments and corrections on lexical materials to the dictionary’s scientific team, and contributing to the dictionary by proposing words, meanings or citations that may not appear in its entries. Users can also browse “Word of the Day” and access the dictionary’s accounts on social media platforms.
Dr Mohammed Al Obaidi, Executive Director of the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, said the new app extends a modern vision for the dictionary that took shape early in its establishment, following the decision to make it electronic so it could overcome the boundaries of place and time and reach anyone wishing to benefit from it wherever they may be.
He explained that the dictionary’s value lies not only in the unprecedented scope, precision and reliability of its lexical content, but also in making it available through easy, modern tools to all Arabic speakers and working to increase its users through different search engines and the app. This serves the dictionary’s fundamental objective as a renaissance project for the entire nation.
The dictionary’s team is laying the foundations for a new phase aimed at using the unique content of the largest historical dictionary of the Arabic language, following the announcement of its completion on 22 December last year. The project was officially launched in May 2013 under the supervision of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, and work continued for more than 12 years with the participation of over 500 researchers from across the Arab world.
The Doha Historical Dictionary’s impact has extended beyond the Arab world, with a growing number of Western universities recommending it to students as a research resource among their electronic sources. Cornell University in the United States and the University of British Columbia in Canada have added it to their digital libraries within a hierarchical classification headed “Near Eastern Studies – Arabic Literature – Dictionaries, Thesauri, and Acronyms.”
